Investors remain cautious despite recent stock price gains and ahead of second-quarter earnings, Evercore Wealth Management partner Tim Evnin told WSJ.com.

"The data seem to be mixed at this point," said Evnin, an equity portfolio manager at the firm's headquarters in New York. "What we're clearly looking for is where the rubber hits the road, which is in corporate earnings. We're looking to get a sense of whether the very good results from the first quarter will continue. The market's valuation is clearly showing that investors are skeptical."

Trading volume continued to be weak ahead of the earnings season.
